Be Cool to the Pizza Delivery Dude

Prompt: Listen to “Be Cool to the Pizza Delivery Dude.” Describe and respond to Adams’s argument. In what ways has Adams tailored her argument for the audio medium? Does Adams’s essay give you any ideas for how you will produce your own audio argument?

Adams’s argument was exactly what the title said: you should be cool to the pizza delivery dude. This can translate to a more universal message that you should be kind to those around you, regardless of who they are or what they do, because it is right. She explains how being cool to the pizza delivery dude imparts kindness, humility, empathy, honor, and equality. These are all traits that people strive for because they make for a more ideal world. Adams takes a specific example of one simple guy and relates it to the rest of the world.

Adams has tailored her argument for the audio medium by making it simple, organized, and smooth. She keeps her argument simple by not going into too much detail and not going of on tangents. She also has very good organization. The paper is separated into a brief introduction followed by the four principles she addresses. Naming each principle at the beginning of the paragraph allows the listener to follow along easily and keep up with what is going on. Adams also reads the essay with a steady voice, tone, and rhythm throughout. This helps the listener to stay focused on what she is saying and makes for easier listening.

For my audio argument, I may look back over the organization of my essay because I do not think it will flow as well as hers the way that it is now.

  1. I liked how Adams used a specific example to make her argument. The organization of her argument was very effective in making her point. I agree with you that by naming her principle at the beginning of the paragraph it makes it easier for the reader to follow. The rate at which Adams reads and her clarity makes her audio argument very effective. I also think that I need to reorganize my essay to make it flow like Adams’ essay does.

  2. Sounds like you picked up some good insights from the Adams piece, both for your writing and for the audio version of your essay. Looking forward to seeing how your argument turns out.
